About the Program
Our Bachelor of Arts in English program prepares you for positions in publications and communications (media production, graphic design, electronic publishing, writing, editing and public relations) and provides a solid education in literary studies for those who intend to pursue careers in teaching or related graduate degrees.
As an English major in the Klein Family School of Communications Design, you'll cultivate habits of attention, inquiry and analysis that come from reading and thinking about literature. You'll develop awareness of language, mastery of technique and creative vision as poets and fiction writers. And you'll gain practical understanding of how technologies shape ideas, forms of expression and cultural values.
As part of your electives requirement (15 credits), you'll have the option to take courses in a suggested area of focus:
- A Literature and Culture focus fosters the development of critical-thinking and interpretive skills through the study of literary works, aesthetics and historical perspectives from around the world.
- A Creative Writing focus nurtures and refines creativity across multiple genres with particular attention to the importance of audience and of the editing process.
- A Professional Writing focus concentrates on the in-demand editing, writing and publishing skills valuable in almost every academic, governmental, nonprofit and business setting.
Beyond the classroom, you'll have the opportunity to participate in internships; write for UBalt's newspaper, The Sting, and its literary magazine, Welter; attend and participate in readings and other literary events; and even publish your own work.
