Theatre, B.A. - Theatre Studies Track

Program Transfer Guide
University of Maryland, Baltimore County

About the Program

The Department of Theatre offers programs of study in acting and theatre design and production. The theatre department offers students an in-depth understanding of their chosen theatrical specialty and an equally expansive knowledge of dramatic history, theory and literature. Students have numerous opportunities to display an understanding of their course work by participating in main stage, studio and student-directed productions.
The theatre department offers two degrees: the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Acting, an intensive performance program, and Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Acting, which provides a broad understanding of all areas of theatre while maintaining a focus on acting. The B.A. is also offered to theatre majors focusing in technical theatre and design or theatre history and literature.
UMBC is one of the most frequently invited theatre programs to be invited to perform at the Kennedy Center, representing the best in college theatre from around the country.
Theatre students also become involved in a wide range of activities on and off campus. They may create a theatre piece with a faculty director and tour high schools, give Shakespeare workshops to inner-city children or develop scenes about dormitory life to be performed at student orientation events.
Students interested in multiple areas of theatre practice develop an array of skills in both technical production and performance through this dynamic, flexible track. Those pursuing this concentration produce traditional theatre and devise new works by serving as directors, dramaturges, designers, performers and playwrights in an ensemble-based training. The track provides a rigorous course of study in technical production with training on state of the art scenic, audio and lighting equipment.
Auditions
Students interested in majoring in acting are not required to audition for entrance into the B.A. in Acting program, unless they are applying for a merit scholarship. All actors enter the B.A. program. In their second semester, those who are interested may apply to the department to enter the B.F.A. in Acting program.
