About the Program

Advisement for the major is available from the Modern Languages and Intercultural Studies Department

The language major may be combined with study in other areas to enhance career opportunities. The department will advise students in planning an academic program to meet individual interests and career objectives.
  • Earn 3 academic credits via a department-approved study abroad program. Questions regarding the fulfillment of this requirement should be directed to your advisor or department chair.
  • Complete 10 courses (3 or 4 credit each) distributed as follows.
    • All major courses must be completed with a C or better.
    • Transfer students must complete a minimum of 6 French major courses at SU with a C or better.
    • A maximum of 4 courses taken abroad (including Salisbury Abroad programs and Global Seminars) may be applied toward the major.

Placement Exams and Credits

The Department of Modern Languages and Intercultural Studies offers language placement evaluations (CAPE) in French, German, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Italian and Russian. All students who have not previously taken any language courses at SU and want to enroll in one are asked to take the departmental placement test in the language chosen to assist in determining proper initial placement level.
A departmental credit buy-back program via the placement test is available in French, German and Spanish. Students who are placed at a level higher than 101 in the chosen language by the CAPE may purchase up to 12 course credits below their placement level in that language after they have completed the course in which they were placed with a grade of C or better. Credits may be purchased at the current rate posted by the cashier’s office. More information is provided here on the departmental web page.
Any student officially enrolled at Salisbury University may also be granted credits through the Advanced Placement (AP) exam or CLEP exam.

Challenge Exams

Any student officially enrolled at Salisbury University may purchase credits through a challenge exam. Credits may not be purchased through a challenge exam for a course below the student’s established level of proficiency. Conversation courses are not available for challenge exam credit.
