With a dual certification in Elementary and Special Education, you will prepare for certifications in both general education for grades 1-6 and special education for grades 1-8. The program includes methods for co-teaching and multiple in-person classroom experiences that include clinical rounds, apprenticeship, assistantship and internships in a variety of school settings. Additionally, as you make your way through the program, specialized courses are offered to support your successes in the classroom.

This program was developed for students with an interest in teaching general education students as well as students with disabilities. The Bachelor of Science in Elementary/Special Education program at Frostburg State is aligned with the 2022 teaching standards and high-leverage practices from CEEDAR and CEC, which will prepare you to be successful once entering the teaching field.
Program Entrance Requirements
- Completion of at least 45 credit hours.
- Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (including all grades from transfer institutions).
- Meeting basic skills requirements set by the Maryland State Department of Education through qualifying scores on PRAXIS CORE, SAT, ACT or having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 including all grades from transfer institutions.
- Grade of C or better (or P) in all required Professional Education Sequence courses, including transfer equivalents, designated by program.
- Grade of C or above in ENGL 101/111 or equivalent and Math Core Skills course.
- Grade of C or above in MATH 206 or 207 or transfer equivalent.
- Positive recommendation of advisor.
- Declaration of a major.
- Declaration of a specialization.
- Completion of Consent and Release form.
- Fingerprinting as a background check is required. For more information, contact the Office of Clinical and Field Experiences EHSC 470.
A grade of C or better (or P) is required in all specialization courses taught within the Educational Professions department or transfer equivalent.
Candidates with an earned Associate of Art in Teaching (A.A.T.) degree from a Maryland Approved program may transfer up to 70 credit hours, satisfying all lower division teacher education program courses (100-200 level) and all GEP requirements.
