Take advantage of the opportunity to excel in a career where preparation is key when you complete this rare dual certification in grades 1-9. When you combine the broad knowledge of an elementary school teacher with the awareness and specialization required for middle school classrooms, you'll possess a sought after skill set.
You’ll choose a focus in a general area like math, science, social studies or English and learn about strategies that suit middle schoolers’ particular needs, all while gaining a deep knowledge of elementary educational development and experience in the field. Your Frostburg degree will mark you as an exceptionally well-prepared professional who can confidently take the reins of any elementary or middle grade classroom.
FSU’s program is the first and currently the only bachelor’s degree in Maryland that prepares students for dual certification to teach in middle and elementary schools.

Program Entrance Requirements
- Completion of at least 45 credit hours.
- Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (including all grades from transfer institutions).
- Meeting basic skills requirements set by the Maryland State Department of Education through qualifying scores on PRAXIS CORE, SAT, ACT or having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 including all grades from transfer institutions.
- Grade of C or better (or P) in all required Professional Education Sequence courses, including transfer equivalents, designated by program.
- Grade of C or above in ENGL 101/111 or equivalent and Math Core Skills course.
- Grade of C or above in MATH 206 or 207 or transfer equivalent.
- Positive recommendation of advisor.
- Declaration of a major.
- Declaration of a specialization.
- Completion of Consent and Release form.
- Fingerprinting as a background check is required. For more information, contact the Office of Clinical and Field Experiences in EHSC 470.
A grade of C or better (or P) is required in all specialization courses taught within the Educational Professions department or transfer equivalent.
Candidates with an earned Associate of Art in Teaching (A.A.T.) degree from a Maryland Approved program may transfer up to 70 credit hours, satisfying all lower division teacher education program courses (100-200 level) and all GEP requirements.
