About the Program

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The program of courses in Chemistry is primarily intended to provide a sound education, as well as excellent research and technical training. The general aim of the Department is to afford thorough instruction in the fundamental theories and principles and in the basic techniques of science. Particular emphasis is placed upon precision of observation and measurement and upon the application of the scientific method.

Two majors are offered by the Department.

1) The Major in Chemistry (ACS). This major is accredited by the American Chemical Society. 2) The Major in Chemistry General. Students who plan to continue their studies in graduate and professional school should elect the ACS option, while those who plan to pursue an advanced degree in health sciences may elect the General Major in Chemistry.

THE MAJOR IN CHEMISTRY ACS

School Requirements: In addition to meeting the requirements in General Education and in the major, students must also complete six (6) credits in the Complementary Studies Program required of all majors in the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences. Options for satisfying this requirement are outlined under the section on the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences. To qualify for graduation, students must pass the Senior Departmental Comprehensive Examination; must have taken all of their junior- and senior-level requirements in the major at Morgan (unless granted prior written permission by the Dean to take courses elsewhere); and must have earned a cumulative average of 2.0 or better and a major average of 2.0 or better, with no outstanding grades below “C” in the major (which includes all courses required for the major and required supporting courses).
